How to run Arcadia Demade This is mainly intended for people who haven't played Doom in a long time and/or aren't experienced playing custom levels. If you're a seasoned Doomer, just load the WAD up with your limit-removing port of choice and enjoy. Getting DOOM 2 -------------- First, you'll need the Doom 2 IWAD (main resource file) from a legit version of the game. If you have the original release from 1994 lying around beneath some Pearl Jam CDs, that'll work fine. Otherwise, you might want to try Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/2300/ If you go this route, you can find the DOOM2.WAD file in this folder: [Folder where you have Steam installed]\steamapps\common\doom 2\base\ DOOM2.WAD is the ~only~ file you need from the Steam folder. All the art, audio and level data are in that file. Getting DOOM to Run on a Modern System -------------------------------------- When you buy Doom 2 on Steam, you get the DOS version running via emulation in DOSBox, which will have a hard time running Arcadia (and many other modern maps) and may crash at certain points. So you'll need a port of the game that runs on your OS and doesn't have the limitations of the DOS version. Because Doom's code was open sourced many years ago, there are several nice "source ports" available: GZDoom: http://grafzahl.drdteam.org/ This is my port of choice. It's an upgraded version of the classic ZDoom port, supports full mouselook, hardware acceleration and has the best alternate HUD of any port I've played. Windows and Linux. Doomsday Engine: http://dengine.net/ If you want Doom to look as pretty as possible, look no further. This port has a ton of options, a very modern interface and it uses many graphical tricks to make the original game and addon levels look gorgeous. Windows, Mac and Linux. Prboom+: http://prboom-plus.sourceforge.net/ This port is a good choice if you're after authenticity. The software renderer is very similar to the original but supports higher resolutions, and it has various compatibility modes that emulate the original DOS version extremely closely. Windows, Mac and Linux. Installation for each of these will vary, but it should be pretty simple. You'll then need to point the software to your DOOM2.WAD - see the documentation of the specific port if you're unclear on how to do that. If you've managed to boot it up and see the Doom 2 title screen, you've got it working. Running Arcadia Demade ---------------------- Once you have Doom 2 working in your port of choice, copy the ARCADIA.WAD file to whatever folder you have that in, and run from the command line like so: gzdoom -file arcadia.wad where "gzdoom" is the name of your Doom port executable. Select "New Game" and a difficulty level. If you see a bulkhead door and some rocky tunnels beyond that, you've got it working. Have fun!
